The biggest news for us this week was Tim completing the STEP exam. He took it on Thursday and was a free man for the rest of the week. He worked really hard and he feels like it went well. We have to wait for a few weeks until we hear about the score. Until then, he will be busy with rotations.
Because the first six months of rotations will be very busy for Tim, I took Friday off so we could have one last family day before Tim disappears. Hyrum is still young and it's hard to do much, but even playing with him at home is always a treat. We went to a splash pad after lunch. He really enjoy it. He split his time between the toddler size playground and the water. The weather was really hot and humid, so it felt great!
Speaking of weather. Cindy (our most recent tropical storm) was a bust! We hardly got any rain. I can't see that for other parts of the south, because there was plenty of flooding. I was hoping for some sort of weather, but we didn't get anything. The summer is still young, so maybe we will get a stronger storm later.
After playing in the water we came home to put Hyrum down for a nap. I got started on dinner to celebrate Tim finishing STEP. I found a really good deal on pork ribs and had been saving them for a while. It was the first time that I ribs. Both boys (the picture on the left is of Hyrum eating a rib) really liked it and I was surprised at how easy it was. I also made yams in the slow cooker. Hyrum ate a whole yam by himself. He does love his fruits and veggies.
We celebrated Tim's birthday on Saturday. We had pizzadillas...two of his most favorite things combined! I also made a peanut butter cake in the slow cooker. We celebrated earlier in the day, because he had stake meetings in the afternoon and evening.
Sunday was Stake Conference for us, so we were able to finish church a little earlier. It was also nice that Tim didn't have as many meetings in the morning.
Other news about Hyrum...I really feel like he has had a communication explosion. He follows simple commands, finds animals and flowers in books, and has started stopping himself if he gets into something he knows he shouldn't be in. For instance, he will go over to the shelf in the kitchen where we keep the oats. He will say, "No, no," shake his finger and walk away. It is kind of nice to not have to go running after him. Don't get me wrong, there is still plenty he will get into, but he is learning. On the flip side, he has an independent streak and will completely ignore us if he doesn't want to do something.
His new favorite thing is knocking. He knocks on anything that makes a noise and sometimes he will say, "Na, na," for knock, knock. Not to be confused with "Na, na," for night, night.
We have also been working on teaching him to identify Jesus. He can say Jesus or point to him. It is really fascinating to watch him learn. We also points to the temple and the prophet. We have started working on amen. We will see how that one goes.
Tim starts his general surgery rotation on Tuesday. We aren't exactly sure what his schedule is and no one will really tell him what to expect. He has a meeting today, so hopefully he will figure things out and we can actually plan our life. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!
