This week was spring break for the local school district. I don't follow their calendar, my calendar revolves around the last frost date. More on that later. There were lots of activities for the kids to participate in and it was nice to have kids to play with that we don't normally get to play with.
With the warmer weather Hyrum has had a renewed interest in soccer. We have a program called dribble up that allows him to practice skills with an instructor. It's kind of cool. Owen never to wants to be left behind, so he has started getting his soccer ball out to practice with Hyrum. It's really cute, but it can get a little crowded with the two of them fighting for ball space.
One activity that we participated in was a STEM programming activity. The older two met up with some friends to program some little robots.
Liam was very bummed that he wasn't old enough. The signup wasn't very clear, so we didn't find out until we got there. He got to explore outside with me for a bit and then got to to choose a tasty treat.
The kids still had all their normal school this week, which was fine. We are getting towards the end of the year, so they are slowing ticking off subjects. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before, but I really love this aspect of homeschool. There is no fluff or trying to fill the time. When the kids are done with a subject they are done and I don't add anything else. Well, I have added a couple of things this year. For instance, Hyrum just finished up his US geography, so now he is memorizing the states in order. It's a fun exercise for him and it only takes a few minutes of practice every day.
Liam is gaining confidence in his abilities. He's going to be my tricky child. He loves to play the "I can't do it" card. He actually can and frequently I am surprised at what he does know, because he plays helpless so often and well. I think he just needs confidence, because once he is confident that he knows something, he wants nothing to do with me. Lila is my super star reader. She really wants to read those bigger chapter books, but can't. Every week we go to the library is checks the books to see if she can find one that she can read. She's really good at putting books back if she things they will be too hard.
Speaking of reading...here is yet more proof that Owen doesn't want to be left behind. Lila will read to Liam frequently, and Owen has started grabbing a book to "lax." I think it's adorable and I love how excited he is getting about books. He continues to pick up words like crazy.
Unfortunately, sickness has struck again. The younger two boys caught what Tim had a couple of weeks ago. It's a really bad chest cold that makes breathing difficult, but only at night. Tim and I have been up multiple times a night for the past several nights with the boys. Their coughing/breathing gets difficult and they wake up. Today was Liam's worst day. You know he doesn't feel well when he falls asleep during the day. Owen was cute and gave him some pats and a hug.
It's been a busy weekend for me. We had a sister pass away somewhat unexpectedly. She was in poorer health, but had a complication from a surgery. We were all in shock, because we had seen her on Sunday and then a few days later we heard what happened. She was a ray of sunshine and much loved, especially by her students at the local university. I spent much of the weekend getting things squared away for the funeral. Next week it will be busy at the beginning of the week as things happen.
Work continues to keep Tim busy. His new MA has started and he really likes him, unfortunately the MA will not be there long as he will be starting medical school. His calling keeps him busy too, just in different ways.
We are all excited for general conference and Easter. Spring is just a great time of year, which is why I follow the last frost date. My original plan was to get all my garden pots ready and harden off my plants. I have a lot that really need to be planted. They have outgrown their containers. I am hoping that I will be able to get everything done this week. Here's hoping. Until then!
