Home at last!

Things ended up being a lot crazier than we thought.  Harvey passed Houston and came right to Southeast Texas and sat for a few days.  We had record amounts or rain.  Those that have been in the area for years have said that it was the worst flooding they have ever seen.  The picture below is of the street earlier in the day.  It was running very fast.  Things got worse on Tuesday night.  The water came up to the house, but Tim's parents were very lucky and they didn't have any damage.  Many were not so lucky and still can't get back to their homes because the waters are still too high.

A big problem in Southeast Texas has been rivers and levees overflowing.  The major roads have been blocked and we were unable to go home until yesterday.  I have never been in a situation were there was a natural disaster like this.  Margie and I went to Walmart to see if we could get a few things.  Trucks had not been able to get in for a bit and many had lost everything.  When we got there it was packed.  The produce section was empty except for things like broccoli and cauliflower (I guess Texans don't like those vegetables).  Bread, eggs and milk were out.  It was crazy!

We got there just in time because when we left they were lining people up to allow one in as one left.

For many it was a waiting game.  You couldn't get anywhere because of the roads, so you had to wait it out.  Hyrum struggled being cooped up for several days.  Quite frankly, we all did.  If you wanted to help you had to stay in your neighborhood because the roads were blocked.  If you had a high profile vehicle you may have been able to get in or out, but it was mostly by boat or helicopter.

I-10 opened up on Saturday afternoon, so we headed back to Houston.  The roads were great, but you could tell there was high water by the water still in the ditches and fields.  There were still cars submerged in water.  They looked like they had been swept off the roads.

Our apartment was fine.  This morning we noticed some water damage around the door.  It looks like water soaked through and warped the door frame and dry wall around the door.  We will have to see if they can fix it.  The biggest casualty was the bananas.  There was a sale on bananas and I bought two batches before we left.  When we got back they were very brown and needed to be used. I ended up making four loaves: 1 banana, 1 banana chocolate chip, 1 banana cream cheese, and 1 banana strawberry cream cheese.

We started with the banana strawberry and it was tasty!

Despite Harvey, Hyrum continued to learn.  This week he learned to say watermelon and Hyrum.  It is really cute when he says his name.  He also started singing the tune to the ABCs.  He has always been interested in music and singing.  He is always humming or chattering about something!

We are all glad the water is going away and to be home.  Hopefully, we won't have any more hurricanes this year!
