We started the summer off with big. Just going to be real, I'm so glad it's summer. I needed a break from school. The kids still do a bit of work during the day, but they can usually get it done fast. There was a lot of imaginative play inside and out. They kept themselves pretty busy, which is great, because I set some lofty goals for myself this week.
Monday the kids played outside in the cooler weather. They have started going out first thing in the morning, which is good, because it's starting to get pretty hot in the afternoons. We had storms off and on throughout the rest of the week. This was one of those days they were able to get out. I decided to try making freezer hash browns again. It wasn't has time consuming as I thought and Lila and Liam enjoyed shredding potatoes.
Tuesday was a stormy day. Hyrum is typically the ring leader when it comes to the subject of their play. This week was a mix of dungeons and dragons and setting up a neighborhood fair to get money. I asked him where he heard about D&D and of course it was from a book. It always amazes me what he learns about from books. They spent a couple of days setting up a fair in the front yard and waiting. Sadly no one came and I had to explain multiple times that I was the middle of a work day and all the kids in the neighborhood where still in school.
Wednesday we took a meal to someone in the ward and watched some cool thunder and lightening.
For once the kids didn't complain about going shopping on Thursday. The kids asked if I could make some blueberry syrup and we were almost out of jam. We went to the place I like to get berries for cheap. Long story short we had to go to two stores and there wasn't a complaint to be heard. The younger kids helped smash and stir berries. We successfully made blueberry syrup and I was able to hot pack my jam. I worked great and I don't think I will ever us up freezer space again for jam!
Friday was a busy day. We went in search of mining tools and headed to the library. The kids have been asking to go mining, so we opted to visit a crystal mine about two hours away from us. It was a blast. I had no idea, but apparently we chose a good one. There was a very nice and knowledgeable digger that said that the one we went to was the best first finding fun crystals. We left early in the morning to get there in time to drive up to the mine. We loaded up in the back of open trucks and bounced all the way up. There were some pretty impressive potholes.
The kids spent the next couple of hours digging around getting insanely dirty and finding all sorts of interesting crystals. It was a ton of fun. It's something that we would go back and do without the kids. Tim and I found it to quit addicting. You spot something and then you start digging around in the area until you remember you're supposed to be watching out for the kids.
After getting changed at the van and cleaned up a little, we drove into town and got a quick lunch before getting on the road. Mom fail...lemonade for lunch. We stopped so many times. We made it home in one piece and started cleaning everything including the crystals. We found some fun ones, but there is a bucket filled with ones that I need to figure out what to do with. Anyone want genuine Arkansas crystals?
